The Thamesman
The Thamesman was made for the installation MATTERS OF LIFE AND DEATH in 2009 at the disused Royal Ear Hospital In London. The sculpture was constructed from material that had been washed up along the banks of the Thames. The finished figure represents a portrait of the river and Londoners at that time as evidenced by the things they discarded. For the last 15 years he’s been living in my studio and over that time he’s gradually been transforming. Many of the things in his body are no longer made and will soon be forgotten. The air of melancholy that he’s always had is being enriched by a creeping patina of nostalgia. He is becoming a period piece and to my eyes he’s all the more beautiful for it. I’ll miss him when he’s gone.
